Emily Edwards

1888-1980

Emily Edwards – Artist, Conservationist, Teacher – was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 7, 1888. She studied with Pompeo Coppini and Diego Rivera. In 1905 she enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. She taught art in San Antonio and West Virginia after 1917. An important period, Blanche Lazzell also taught in West Virginia, it is likely that the two were friends and Emily Edwards learned the White-line color woodcut technique from Lazzell. She also worked as a stage designer in New York City and Massachusetts. She was to co-founder of the San Antonio Conservation Society.
