Gifford Beal

1879-1956

Gifford Beal was an American printmaker, painter and muralist, born in Bronx, New York. He was the younger brother of artist Reynolds Beal. He took summer classes with impressionist William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art, and later studied at both Princeton University and the Art Students League of New York. Beal served as the League's president from 1914-1929. In 1908 he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design, becoming a full member in 1914. He was also part of the American Watercolor Society, Century Association and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Gifford Beal's first solo exhibition was in 1920 at Kraushaar Galleries, which started a lifelong relationship with the gallery.
