Glenn O. Coleman

1887-1932

Glenn O. Coleman was born in Springfield, Ohio and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Early in his life, Coleman showed a talent for drawing and at 14 was listed in the Indianapolis city directory as an illustrator with the “Indianapolis Press.”  He moved to New York City a few years later, studying with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri.

Coleman identified with the poor and struggling because he was one of them.  He illustrated for “The Masses” and has been often described as an Ash Can realist. As a printmaker it should be noted that his father was a pressman for the Indianapolis Press. So, from early in his life Coleman was exposed to printmaking.  He produced a remarkable body of lithographic images of New York City street scenes.
