Henry Emerson Tuttle

Henry Emerson Tuttle was an American etcher best known for his avian imagery. His love for birds stemmed from childhood when kidneys disease led to him spending a great deal of time observing them. He was formally trained Yale University and the Slade School in London, and published his first drypoint in 1925 at the age of thirty-five. His work sold so well, Tuttle turned his focus onto an art career. His work was widely exhibited in Nantucket, where he would eventually become the first president of the Artist Association of Nantucket in 1945. Sadly, he died before completing his first term. 

Tuttle worked as the Curator of Prints at the Yale Art Gallery during the 1930s and 1940s. He was also a member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, Chicago Society of Etchers and the American Federation of Arts. Yale University Press published a catalog raisonne of his work in 1948, two years after his death.
