Henry Popple

d. 1743

Henry Popple was a British geographer, mathematician, author and publisher. He was also a clerk to the Board of Trade and Plantations, which governed the British colonies in America. Popple spent many years toiling over the construction of a map depicting North America and its boundaries. The large, twenty-panel map, while never officially accepted by the Board of Trade, was the first large scale map of North America and was well accepted in the colonies, where many notable figures, including Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, purchased copies.
