J. J. Lankes

1884-1960

Julius John Lankes, better known as J. J. Lankes, was an American printmaker, author and teacher, best known for his wood engravings. He was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. His initial training was completed at the Buffalo Commercial and Electro-Mechanical Institute, where he learned to be draftsman and a patent artist. About six years later, around 1908, he went on to study at the Art Students' League of Buffalo and then the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Lankes made his first wood engraving in 1917 and quickly fell in love with the process. He produced over 1,300 woodcuts over the course of his lifetime for various projects, including book and magazine publications.
