John Stockton de Martelly

1903-1979

John Stockton de Martelly was an American printmaker, illustrator, painter and teacher, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before traveling to Europe, where he studied in London and Florence. Much of de Martelly's work in the 1930s and 40s falls under the Regionalist movement, which he was influenced by while teaching at the Kansas City Art Institute with the likes of Thomas Hart Benton. By the end of the 40s, however, Regionalism had fallen out of favor and he began working as abstract expressionist.
