Lawrence E. Kupferman

1909-1982

Lawrence Kupferman was an American painter and printmaker, born in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Art and the Massachusetts College of Art. During the 1930’s he produced a group of realistic drypoints and etchings, but became increasingly more abstract starting in the 40s. In 1946 Kupferman started spending summers in Provincetown, where he met Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann and Jackson Pollack and other abstract artists. Kupferman taught at the Massachusetts College of Art for a time, retiring in 1969.
