Mabel A. Royds

1874-1941

Mabel Royds was a British artist born in Bedfordshire. She is best known for her color woodcuts. At the age of fifteen she won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy Schools in London, but chose to attend Slade School instead, where she was taught by Henry Tonks. After completing her studies, she took up an apprenticeship in Paris, and later a teaching position at Havergal College in Toronto, Canada. She returned to the UK in 1911 to teach at the Edinburgh College of Art. After marrying, Royds and her husband traveled extensively. Her time in India and Tibet in particular were major focus on her work during the 1920s.
