Albert Sterner

1863-1946

Painter, printmaker and illustrator was born in London.  He studied at the Birmingham Art Institute while attending Kin Edward’s School.  After moving to Chicago with his family 1879-1880 he began working for a lithographer printing stage scenery for the Grand Opera House.  In 1885 he moved to New York and established his own studio working for Harpers, Scribner’s, Century, and Collier’s.  In 1888 he was in Paris studying at the Academie Julian.  During WWI he returned to the United States and began teaching at the Art Students League.  His work can be found in many museums around the world.
