Roi Partridge

Roi Partridge was born in 1888 in Centralia in the territory of Washington. In 1909, Partridge traveled to New York City where he studied for a year at the National Academy of Design. He studied etching in Munich under Brockhoff and spent three years in Paris working as a printmaker. In 1914, as the German troops were approaching the French capital, Partridge returned to Seattle. In 1915, 44 of his etchings were shown at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition. Partridge moved to San Francisco in 1917 and began teaching at Mills College in Oakland. In 1920, he became the school gallery’s first art director. In 1946, Partridge took a leave of absence from teaching. He continued etching until 1952 and finally, he retired in 1954. The last years of his life were spent in Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, California, where he died in 1984. Partridge was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the California Society of Etchers and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers. Partridge signed some of his early works with a drawing of a partridge.
