Seth Eastman

(1808-1875)

Seth Eastman was born in Brunswick, Maine in 1808. He is a well known military officer and artist. He graduated from West Point in 1829 and was assigned to Fort Crawford in Wisconsin, and in 1830 was moved to Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. He returned to West Point in 1833 and became the assistant drawing teacher until 1940, when he returned to Fort Snelling. He was known for spending a great deal of time with the Indian tribes, recording in drawing their lives and customs. He illustrated numerous books including “Dakotah” in 1849 and “The Romance of Indian Life” in 1853.
