Allen Lewis

1873-1957

Printmaker, illustrator and teacher, was born on April 7, 1873 in Mobile, Alabama and as a young boy moved to Buffalo, New York.  He studied at the Buffalo Art Students League under George Bridgman.  He left to study in Paris in 1894 enrolling in the Ecole des Beaux Arts.  He produced his first etchings in Paris and his work was included in an exhibition with Whistler and Pennell in 1900.  Returning to the United States he settled in New York.  Alfred Steiglitz's Gallery 291 gave him a show of 43 etchings and drypoints.  Throughout most of his career he worked on bookplate commissions and illustrating books.  He is a noted etcher and block printer.  He taught at the New School for Social Research 1932-1934.
