Walt F. Kuhn

1877-1949

Born in Brooklyn, New York on October 27, 1877, Kuhn's first job was as a bicycle racer and bicycle repairman.  He sold his first drawing at the age of 15 and signed his name as Walt.  In 1899 he moved to San Francisco and became an illustrator for Wasp Magazine.  In 1901, deciding on a career as an artist, he left for Europe to study in Paris and Munich, returning to New York in 1903.  He was a principal organizer of the 1913 Armory Show, which brought modernism to America.  His work is in many museum collections around the world.
