William Meyerowitz

1887-1981

William Meyerowitz, painter, printmaker, was born in Gezelitz, Ukraine around 1887. His early training in art was working for a sign painter in Gezelitz. He studied at the National Academy of design and was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Independent Artists, Gloucester Society of Artists, and North Shore Arts Association. Meyerowitz met and married the celebrated artist Teresa Berstein who has written several books on his life and art. William had seventy-five one man shows during his lifetime and is represented in numerous public and private collections. While studying at the National Academy of Design he met William Mielatz who was the etching teacher at the Academy. Meyerowitz credited Mielatz in teaching him multi plate color etching.
