William S. Schwartz

1896-1977

Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia and came to the United States in 1913. After several years in Omaha, Nebraska he settled in Chicago in 1916. In order to study at the Art Institute of Chicago, Schwartz supported himself by singing at operas, vaudeville and other entertainment venues. His artistic work was quickly recognized and the Art Institute of Chicago featured him in three solo exhibitions, dating 1926, 1929, and 1935.
