Margery Ryerson

1886-1989

Painter, printmaker, watercolorist, she born on September 15, 1886 in Morristown, New Jersey.  Graduating from Vassar College she went on to study at Cape School of Art in Provincetown with Charles Hawthorne and the Art Students League with Robert Henri.  In 1923 she wrote a book on Robert Henri "The Art of Spirit."  Throughout her lifetime she received many portrait commissions, however she is best known for images of children.  She taught art for many years  in New York Settlement Houses schools working with immigrants and underprivileged children.  Her images were captivating and are considered some of her greatest work.  She was a member of the National Academy of Design and is in the permanent collection of many institutions around the world.
