1789–1854
John Martin (1789–1854) was a French painter and printmaker. He is best known for this religous paintings, many of which were turned into engravings. Martin himself engraved some of them. So impressive were these engravings, the king of France, Louis Philippe, gave him a medal to show his admiration. Later in life, he was accepted as a member of the Belgian Acadamy and was knighted into The Order of Leopold by the Belgian king.
