Thomas H Poppleton

“Little is known about the surveyor Poppleton apart from the several maps he produced. After his 1811 proposal did not yield an adequate number of subscriptions to justify publishing the Baltimore plan, he apparently went to New York City. In 1817 the firm Prior & Dunning published his Plan of the City of New-York the greater part from actual survey made expressly for the purpose (the rest from authentic documents) by Thos. H. Poppleton, city surveyor. It was engraved by Peter Maverick and printed by Samuel Maverick. The plan only shows lower Manhattan below Thirtieth Street. Editions of the plan, ‘revised and corrected by Wm. Hooker,’ were published in 1826 and 1829, the former by Prior & Dunning, the latter by Prior & Brown.” Walter Ristow.
