Arthur B. Davies

1862-1928

Arthur Bowen Davies was an American lithographer, painter, illustrator and sculptor, best known for his nudes. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York. He was one of "The Eight" who exhibited together in New York City in 1908. The exhibition had a major influence on American art, which, prior, had been heavily influenced by traditional European academics. "The Eight" would later join the Ashcan School movement. Davies also helped select some of the avant-garde works that would make the 1913 Armory Show so important to American art history.
