Albert Boschke

c.1832-1910

German or Polish born civil engineer and cartographer. Worked for the U.S. Coast Survey office in Washington DC where he undertook surveys of many ports including New York, Brooklyn and Boston. Best known for two maps of Washington DC. The first was a very large wall map published in 1857; Second published in 1861 which was critical to the defense of the nation's capital during the American Civil War. Lived in Massachusetts, later moved to California. Developed and patented many types of marine dredging equipment.
