Eduard Friedrich Poeppig

1798-1868

German zoologist and explorer. Between 1826 and 1832 he visited Chile, Peru and Brazil making observations and producing a series of drawings, watercolors of the areas he visited. He described over 4,000 plant species, investigated Incan ruins and travelled the entire length of the Amazon River. Upon his return to Germany in 1832, he wrote of his travels and observations, producing "Nova genera et species plantarum in regno Chilensi ..." and "Reise in Chile, Peru und auf dem Amazonenstrome während der Jahre...". Because of his work he became an associate professor at the University of Leipzig, where he remained until his death.
