Carlton T. Chapman

1860-1925

Carlton Theodore Chapman was an American painter and printmaker who specialized in marine scenes.  He was born in New London, Ohio and studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of New York. His paintings were awarded medals at art exhibitions around the country, including at The World's Colombian Exposition at Chicago, 1893; Atlanta Exposition, 1894; Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, 1901 and Charleston Exposition in 1902.

Chapman illustrated a number of naval history books over the course of his life, one of which was James Barnes' "Naval Actions of the War of 1812" published in 1896. He also worked as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly during the Spanish American War.
