Chet La More

1908-1980

Painter, Printmaker, sculptor, and educator, was born in Wisconsin growing up in Madison. He studied at the Layton School of Art before receiving instruction from Arthur Colt.  He studied Art History and Art Criticism at the University of Wisconsin.  In 1933 he left Madison to travel to Baltimore.  He started painting murals with the Works Projects Administration.  In 1936 he moved to New York and was active in the Artist's Union.  He moved to Buffalo where he taught at the Albright Art School before joining the army during WWII.  After the war he settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan and taught at the University of Michigan.  His work is in many American museums including the Museum of Modern Art, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
