Joan Chiverton studied at the School of Visual Arts.  She was born into art, so to speak, with a father working as an artist and her mother a writer.  She worked for many years as an illustrator and was an award winning art director with ad agencies in New York City and upstate New York where she moved to raise her three children.  She has worked for many companies including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Magazine, and McDonald’s.  Alpha Media

Joan learned printmaking at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.  Today she prefers etching to the other processes she learned.  Her prints are generally hand wiped “a la Poupee.”  She teaches at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Bard Graduate Center Gallery and privately.

She serves on the boards of The Society of Illustrators and The Society of American Graphic Artists.  She has exhibited at The Society of Illustrators, The Society of American Graphic Artists annual exhibitions, Jazz Textures, Sacred Gallery, and Monmouth Museum.

Why do I sketch so many musicians?
"I would draw my son during piano lessons, rehearsals and eventually performances. Some people who are excited by good music feel compelled to dance. I feel compelled to draw the music. I draw quickly and love to capture the gestures of the performers, the movement, the mood they are creating. I don’t restrict myself to jazz or classical or country or rock. I like them all especially when I’m drawing. The prints I make are taken from the drawings I enjoy most. I let the subject matter dictate whether they want to become a silkscreen or an etching."
