• DESCRIPTION: This unusual perspective view of a crenelated building with tower is called a "horizontorium." This was an architectural print popular in Europe, which had to be viewed from a particular angle, in order for the subject's normal proportions to be visible. William Shires was a mathematical tutor.

This is an early take on 3-D illustration. If you place your chin on the "F" mark at the bottom, the image appears to stand right before you. Optical prints became very popular in Europe in the late eighteenth-century with vue-optiques.
