  • DESCRIPTION: Charles Henri D’Estaing (1729-94) served as a French admiral who spent his early military career in India. He went on to become a sea officer and commanded the French West Indies during the American War for Independence. A former governor of the Antilles, Charles Henri was able capture Grenada in 1779. Less successful was his attack on Savannah, Georgia, from which he sustained an injury serious enough to send him back to France. Upon returning to France, Charles Henri supported the Revolution and was made the commander of the National Guard at Versailles and then eventually made the Admiral of France in 1792. He was arrested during the Terror, and guillotined.
