New Haven..<br><br>Gurdon Saltonstall was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to a political family who had been a presence in government since the settling of the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1630. Saltonstall attended Harvard where he studied to become a Congregational minister. Upon the death of his friend and colleague Governor Fitz-John Winthrop, Saltonstall was appointed governor of Connecticut from 1708 -1725 with no prior political background. His strong Congregational beliefs lead him to favor established authority and he successfully reorganized the Congregational Church in the state of Connecticut. He is credited with being one of the founders of Yale University and moved the college from Saybrook to New Haven.
