DESCRIPTION: View from the St. John River of a house in a pastoral setting. Scarce lithograph printed by Charles Hullmandel after sketches by Lt. Edward T. Coke. A British officer in the 45th Regiment, Lt. Coke toured the United States and Canada. The sketches appeared in his journal, "A Subaltern's Furlough ...in Various Parts of the United States." The superb quality of these lithographs comes from Hullmandel, who was one of England's first lithographers and certainly it's most influential. He is credited with perfecting the medium through such inventive techniques as the "brush," "stump," and "tinted" styles.
