  • DESCRIPTION: Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), the grandfather of Charles Darwin, was an accomplished intellectual of the eighteenth century. He was a well-regarded doctor, poet, naturalist, and philosopher. Darwin’s “Zoonomia, or, The Laws of Organic Life” was perhaps the first formal theory of evolution to be published. Darwin recognized many of the same principles his grandson later came to extrapolate on, including those of sexual selection and competition. A progressive thinker, Darwin was also revered for his role in the emergence of the industrial era.
