  • DESCRIPTION: The title continues with, "compiled from actual surveys deposited in the Patent Office at New York, by order of His Excellency Major General William Tryon, by Claude Joseph Sauthier, Esqr."<br><br> Joseph Sautier was a surveyor, topographer and engineer from Strasbourg, France He came to America in 1767 as the official Surveyor for Governor Tryon of North Carolina, (1764-71) where he he made several surveys of towns in the colony and designed the Governor's Mansion in New Burn. He accompanied Tyron to New York when Tryon was appointed Governor there in 1771. He subsequently produced many surveys of New York including this very large detailed map which was so well received it was engraved and published by William Faden in London, first as "A Map of the Province of New York in 1776 and later this vastly improved map. <br> During the Revolution he served as a military engineer producing a number of fine maps for used by the British Army. <br><br> Cartographically the Chorographical Map adds a tremendous amount of information lacking from the 1776 map, particularly in upstate New York, the Catskills, and what would later become Vermont. The large scale, five miles to the inch, also allowed for the inclusion of many previously omitted details in the more settled areas.<br><br> An important and scarce map.

  • CONDITION: Overall in very good condition. There is some chipping and a few minor splits but for the size it is remarkably good. Original outline hand coloring.
