• DESCRIPTION: An unusual and quite scarce separately issued map of the Americas. OCLC/WorldCat lists single copies four Cary maps with similar titles, from 1817, 1824, 1825, and 1824, all but the 1824 map on a smaller scale. No examples of this 1827 issue are recorded.

On this map Illinois, Mississippi and Alabama are shown as territories. The North West Territory is also noted (Later Minnesota and Wisconsin). Today’s Upper Peninsula og Michigan is named Chippeway Territory. Mexico is shown at its fullest extent, with all of Texas, California and the general south west being under its control. Unusual for a British imprint is the depiction of the dividing line in the Oregon Territory. In this map all of Vancouver Island is included as being part of the U.S. but just to the east is left open ended. In general the British point of view for the northern boundary of the Oregon Territory used the Columbia River as a dividing point. Later this border dispute gave rise to the slogan "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight" (1844 James Polk presidential election campaign) and almost lead to war with Great Britain.
