  • DESCRIPTION: A fine pair of maps of the island of Cuba. These maps are from Francisco Coello's the Atlas de Espana y sus posesiones de ultramar published in Madrid between 1848 and 1869. Coello only produced forty five of the planned sixty five maps. Each was issued in folded form, with pocket map covers. The maps were intended to accompany the Diccionario geografico estadistico historico by Pascual Madoz. Coello is considered to be the foremost Spanish cartographer of the 19th century. The first map dated 1853 shows the majority of the island. The second map shows the eastern and western tips. Many inset maps of large and smaller towns, villages and harbors including Havana, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa.
