Novi Belgii Novaeque Angliae Nec Non partis Virginiae Tabula.

  • ARTIST: Justus Danckerts

  • MEDIUM: Handcolored copper plate engraving,

    DATE: 1673-c.1690.

  • EDITION SIZE: 18 1/8 x 21 3/8" (46 x 54.2 cm) plus margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: One of the great maps of Mid-Atlantic and New England with the “Visscher” inset view of New Amsterdam, aka New York.

Cartographically, the map is based upon Jansson-Visscher series of maps that were first issued in 1651, (See Burden 305 & 315) In 1655, Danckers issued his own version of the map with Jansons vignettes of animals and Indian life, and Visscher’s view of New Amsterdam, showing the Battery and Dutch buildings on the waterfront as well as a gallows. An extensive study of the view by Stokes suggests that the view was drawn sometime between 1653 and 1655, prior to the construction of New York's wall. The first edition of the map (1655-56) is extremely rare, known in only a handful of impressions. The second edition was issued in about 1683 and shows Philadelphia for the first time. The third edition (this example) now notes the Dutch settlement of “Niew Castel alias Sabdhoeck” or New Castle which has added to the west bank of Delaware Bay.
