  • DESCRIPTION: The hand written title below the watercolor; "Interior of the Brooklyn Theatre on the Evening of December 5th, 1876, when it was destroyed by fire.-" The original watercolor used to make the wood engraving & the original wood engraving published in Frank Leslie's Newspaper. The scene shows some of the actors from "Two Orphans" trying to calm the audience. Some of the actors in that production were Kate Clarton, H. S. Murdoch, & J. B. Studley, among others. Over three hundred people died in this calamity (paperwork of full account attached on mat verso).

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: The watercolor has initials that look to be AB - Possibly the signature is by Albert Berghaus who was an active illustrator with Frank Leslies between the years 1869-1880.

  • CONDITION: Watercolor mounted on board (from the period) - the board is missing bits at lower left corner and a small section at upper paper edge. Two tears in board - one into the title line the other from upper paper edge to decorative hand ruled line just above watercolor paper. The wood engraving has some very minor scuffs at bottom paper edge - Both are otherwise in good condition.
