Nova Virginiae Tabula.

  • ARTIST: Henricus Hondius

  • MEDIUM: Handcolored copper plate engraving,

    DATE: 1630

  • EDITION SIZE: 15 x 19 3/8" (382 x 492 mm) plus margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: This map, in the Jodocus Hondius version, (1618) was the first derivative of the highly important John Smith Map of Virginia of 1612 which was first to depict the bay and its tributaries with any accuracy. Jodocus Hondius first issued the map in 1618 but only small handful was printed. In 1629 Jodocus died and his widow, unbeknownst to his brother Henricus, sold the copper plate to firm of Willem Blaeu. Henricus had to re-engrave an entirely new plate which was issued in 1630. In the upper left corner is an image the great Indian chief Powhatan surrounded by his subjects. In the upper right is the British Royal Arms, below that is an image of an Indian warrior armed with a bow and war club. <br><br.>
