From the “Manuel of the Common Council of the City of New York” by D.T Valentine published from 1841 - 1870. Also known as the Valentine’s Manuals they contain hundreds of lithographs, maps and woodcuts of New York City and is the first comprehensive portrait of the city. <br><br> In the 1800s it was common for merchants to register their cargo at coffee houses. Such was the case for the Tontine Coffee House (the second building on the left), which was one of the prominent trading houses in downtown Manhattan. Merchants would gather to buy, sell and trade wares, leaving some researchers to regard the the Tontine Building as one of New York's early stock exchanges.
