(Figures by [Adolphe Jean Baptiste] Bayot. <br><br> Avignon is a city located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region in southeastern France, along the Rhone River. Historically notable, Avignon served as the place of residence for seven Popes between 1309-1377, a period known as the Avignon Papacy (also known as the Babylonian Captivity). Pope Clement VI purchased the town from Queen Joanna I of Naples in 1348, by which time it had already acquired a reputation of being "a free town, strong and arrogant enough to defy the King of France." Being the seat of the Papacy for nearly three-quarters of a century made it a hugely important entity in Medieval Europe, even after their residence was moved. In fact, Avignon remained a papal territory until the French Revolution (1789-1799). <br><br> Today the city is known for its architectural beauty, which includes the Palais des Papes (Pope's Palace). The city's historic central region was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 and was designated a European cultural capital in 2000 (an annual event where the designated cities host cultural events highlighting the "richness and diversity of European Cultures").
