  • DESCRIPTION: John Joseph Pershing, (1860-1948) nicknamed 'Black Jack,' was a General in the United States Army. He holds the very first service number (a system used between 1918 and 1969 to keep better track of enlisted soldiers) and is one of two Americans to ever hold the title of 'General of the Armies' (bestowed in 1919); the other was George Washington, who obtained the title in 1976 during the bicentennial celebrations. Pershing studied at West Point from 1882-1886 and moved through the ranks quicker than most. He served in the Indian Wars, Spanish American War, Philippine American War, Mexican Revolition, World War I and was an observer in the Russo-Japanese War. While Pershing did not serve in World War II he was a mentor to many of the general who did. John J. Pershing is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery and was succeeded by his son, Colonel Francis Warren Pershing; a tragic fire robbed him of his wife and three daughters in 1915.
