This design is a crane-neck rotary engine and one of the earliest of its type. The date is derived from another advertisement broadside that illustrated the same engine and gave results from a trial in 1878 in Chicago.<br><br> The American La France company was formed 1873 in Elmira, New York. It later moved to Summerville, SC and also operated a plant in Toronto, Canada. Sadly it ceased operations in 2014.
