  • DESCRIPTION: Painted by G. H. Barrable and R. Ronsonby Staples. Australia versus England match at Lord’s, London. According to history this match never occurred; however, it contains the portraits of most of the notable cricket players of the era. W. G. Grace for England can be seen batting. England’s players on left below the image are R. G. Barlow; W. Scotton; W. Barnes; A. N. Hornby; Hon. A. Lyttelton; Dr. W. G. Grace; A. C. Steel; Lord Harris; G. Ullyett; W. W. Read; A. Shrewsbury. Australia’s players on right below the image are T. W. Garrett; P. S. McDonnell; S. P. Jones; A. C. Bannerman; H. J. H. Scott F. R. Spofforth; G. Griffen; G. E. Palmer; J. M’C. Blackham; W. L. Murdoch; G. J. Bonnor. The stands are also full of notables. The Prince and Princess of Wales (Albert Edward (“Bertie”) (later King Edward VII) are walking toward the stands. The actress, Lillie Langtry, is seated in the stands looking out to the viewer. It is reported that Langtry and Albert Edward had an affair. Lady de Grey shows a scorecard to Lord Harris in the left foreground. On the card is “Lord’s Ground Australia v England 1887.”

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: There are at least two editions of this image. It was issued by Boussod Valadon & Co. in 1887. Hildesheimer & Co. Ltd., London and Manchester, purchased the copper plate around 1900 and issued a second printing from the plate which is more common than the first issue. Hildesheimer’s publication line is added, as well as a Masonic crest between the two groups of portraits in the later printing.

  • CONDITION: Very good condition, printed chine-colle. With extremely wide margins, some minor tears in the outer edges of the margins. A brilliant rich impression.
