  • DESCRIPTION: J. Wilkinson, pinx. A fine mezzotint portrait of General Israel Putnam (1718-1790). Putnam was a farmer and tavern keeper in Connecticut. During the French and Indian War served with Robert Rogers with the fabled Rogers’ Rangers. During the war he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Connecticut militia. During the Revolution he served with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill at Charlestown where he is credited with the quote "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." He suffered a debilitating stroke in 1779 ending his military career.

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: Provenance of this impression is Zachary T. Hollingsworth upon his death in 1925 bequeathed it to his son Valentine, who upon his death in 1942, bequeathed it to his son Mark Hollingsworth. This print was acquired from the wife of Mark Hollingsworth.
