  • DESCRIPTION: Robert Mayokok (1903 -1983) was a native Alaskan (Inupiaq) artist, writer and adventurer. After surviving the devasting effects of the 1918 flu epidemic in his village, young Mayokok turned to hunting, trapping, and herding. He accompanied a herd of reindeer to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. In the 1950s, Mayokok took up drawing and painting after recovering from tuberculosis. A prolific artist, he would sell his depictions of Eskimo life from Anchorage galleries. Mayokok’s popularity resulted in an invitation to demonstrate his craft at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Museums holding his work include the California Academy of Sciences, the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the University of Alaska Museum at Fairbanks, the Ketchikan Museum, and the Kodiak Historical Society.
