  • DESCRIPTION: Length, 468 ft. Bredth, 45 ft. Tonnage, 5.004. Horse Power, 5,000. <BR><BR> This is the first of three ships to sail under the name Britannic. She was built in 1874 and her maiden voyage was on June 25 from Liverpool to New York and in the fall set set the speed record for a crossing. <BR><BR> On May 19, 1887 the SS Celtic collided with the Britannic. The two ships hit at almost right angles with the Celtic running into the side of the Britannic. Neither ship sank, however 12 passengers on the Britannic died or were missing. A young Eleanor Roosevelt was a passenger on the Britannic during the incident.
