  • DESCRIPTION: A fine map of Boston shown during a time of rapid changes. Cartographically the map shows a area from Lexington and Dedham in the west to Cohasset and Nahant in the east. The Back Bay is shown being partially filled. Identifies important locations such as Harvard University, the Navy Yard, the U.S. Marine Hospital and the Quincy Railway, aka Granite railway, the first railway in America. Many homes are shown along the roads outside of Boston proper. This map appeared Bowen's Picture of Boston, or The citizen's and stranger's guide to the metropolis of Massachusetts, and its environs.
