DESCRIPTION: Signed, titled, and dated in pencil. It is based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozert's Requiem mass in D minor which he composed in Vienna in 1791 and left unfinished at his death. In 1792 Franz Xaver Sussmayr completed and delivered the requiiem mass in minor D to Count Franz von Walsegg who had anonymously commissioned the piece for a requiem mass to commemorate the February 14 anniversary of his wife's death. The woodcut was inspired by stained glass church windows which the artist visited in Germany.
