  • DESCRIPTION: The Nassau Balloon, which had hoisted Mr. Cocking into the air, can be seen in the distance, near the upper paper edge. Mr. Cocking was an amateur scientist bent of improving Andre-Jacques Garnerin’s 1802 parachute design. His concept was a complete failure and Mr. Cocking plummeted to his death shortly after his release from the Nassau. His failed decent made him infamous.
