From William Simpson’s “India Ancient and Modern - A Series of Illustrations of the Country and People of India and Adjacent Territories.” William Simpson (1823-1899) was Scottish born an artist and war correspondent that forged his reputation in the Crimea War. For this series he was commissioned by the noted publisher Day & Son to travel to India and record the places affected by the events of the 'Mutiny' of 1857. The resulting works were intended to rival David Roberts' Holy Land in scope and quality. By 1866 Simpson had delivered 250 watercolors. Unfortunately in 1867 Day & Son went into bankruptcy. In the end only fifty images were published and the production was very limited. Printed on paper and mounted on card as issued. 18th-19th Century Subjects , Town Views - Asia , India
