In 1843 he won a silver medal at the Paris Salon. In the early 1860's he travelled the world, visiting the Middle East, India, Singapore, Siam, Macao, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan and the United States. During his travels he made watercolors of many of the places he visited. Many of these watercolors were published c.1864 in Berlin by R. Wagner as chromolithographs. The original watercolors from the voyage were exhibited in London in 1866 and at an exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1868.
