  • DESCRIPTION: Ch.Ph.invt. H.D.lith. Imp.d'Aubert et de Junca. Chez Aubert, gal.véro dodat. Caricaturana is a series of 100 lithographs, numbered 1-100. They first appeared in Le Charivari between 1836 and 1838. They also were sold in a bound album format with the title "Les Robert Macaires." Each image was printed on heavy wove paper and was offered uncolored for 45 francs and hand colored for 55 francs. Text below title reads, "Mon cher Boniface, il fallait autrefois a un apothicaire quarante ans pour gagner 2000 f. de rentes…… vous marchiez nous volons nous! – Mais comment faites vous donc ? – Nous prenons du suif, de la brique pilee ou de l’amidon, nous appelons ca pate Onicophane, Racahout, Nafe, Osmaniglou ou de tout autre nom plus ou moins charabia, nous faisons des annonces, des prospectus, des circulaires, et en dix ans nous realisons un million….. Il faut attaquer la fortune en face, vous la preniez du mauvais cote!" <br><br> Translation - "My dear Boniface, in the old days an apothecary had to work for forty years in order to attain an income of 2'000Fr. You were walking it. Now we steal away on the wings of fortune! -- But how do you manage that? -- We take tallow, powdered brick or starch, we call it Onicophanic paste, Racahout, Nafé, Osmaniglou, or some other gibberish, we produce prospectuses and circulars and in ten years we make a million... You went about things in the wrong way, one should attack fortune from the front!"
